Coach Farley was and always will be one of the greatest mentors I ever had. As a student athletic trainer working with Stump everyday, I was often under the constant scrutiny of Coach at practices, games and many, many camps. So many camps, that I never thought there would be a day where I wasn’t wearing a Wishbone or O & D or Kickers or Baseball Camp T-shirt (and they were all very similar!).

At practices I remember being terrified that I was going to flip one of those huge, crazy metal numbers at the wrong second, or put the dummies in the wrong place or take too long to fix a football helmet. Trying to earn Coach Farley’s respect meant so much to me. Once I earned that respect, and I knew coach believed in my abilities, it meant the world to me. He was kind of like another parent that, for sure, I never wanted to disappoint!

Two of my favorite Coach Farley stories came at camp. One day, Stump and I had taken all the pitching JUGS machines apart and put them in boxes to store. We took them to Farley’s farm and stacked them on the porch. Little did I know that we stacked the boxes the wrong way, so Coach couldn’t see the serial numbers.

Farley looked at me and said “God LaRue, I thought you were smarter than that!” He wasn’t happy… but of course, Stump and I have laughed about that moment many times through the years! (And later even laughed about it with Coach Farley).

Another day Coach Farley wanted me to paint the 5th Quarter (Up Down) Poles. So, he brought me a can of paint and one of those itty-bitty little foam brushes about 1 ½ inches long with the little stick on the end. I looked at it, but kept my thoughts to myself and just started tackling this project. Of course, Coach came out and checked on me often, and I was doing a good job, but wasn’t making any progress. I pleaded for a bigger paint brush, but he just laughed at me.

The sprayer came on a crazy windy day so of course there were comments about how much paint I had on me, but at least I had finished! He was thoroughly entertained by this whole process, but I do know he appreciated the effort.

After proving myself (and graduating), Coach Farley wrote or called people for me with very positive recommendations.  One day, a couple years after graduating, and while serving as the Head Athletic Trainer at Stillwater HS, Coach Farley called me and asked if I would like to go down and work pre-season football for 2-weeks at UW-Platteville.

I didn’t realize at the time how close Coach Chryst at UW-P and Coach Farley were. After two weeks they offered me a full-time position as the Head Athletic Trainer at UW-P and I stayed there for 10 years!  George and Coach Farley talked several times a week, so even if I was a long way from RF, I stayed in good communication with Coach Farley through George Chryst and still tried measuring up to his expectations at all times. We kept in touch and I knew he would always be there for me when I needed him.

Thanks to my time at UWRF and at UWP, I had the absolute privilege to work with two of the finest and most well-respected men I have ever met. I will always be thankful for that!
